Community Memorials

After the war had finished, many communities established a war memorial  or cenotaph at a prominent location in their town to honour those who had paid the supreme sacrifice.

Temporary Memorial, Hobart

The Hobart War Memorial Committee in 1920 had decided that any Hobart war memorial had to be adjacent to the Soldiers Memorial Avenue which had already been established. The original planned site for the memorial had been on Blundstone's Flat on the first major bend of the Avenue. On this site was erected the temporary Memorial

The current site became available in 1924

 In 1925 the Cenotaph was constructed from public donations and became the first capital city memorial in Australia.

The location was once the site of the Queen’s Battery, dating from the 1840s, one of a network of harbour defence batteries around Hobart with others sited on Bellerive Bluff and above Sandy Bay beach.
